The latest addition to the Google empire focuses on the indoors. Google has just announced that they are going to allow business owners and managers to register their internal floor plan on Google Maps.
Yes, this means that when you’re at the airport you can use your Google Maps equipped device to find your gate. You’ll even be able to navigate your local mall more easily.
However, the benefits for business owners and managers go much further than this. Small businesses and retailers located within larger, shared commercial buildings will enjoy added visibility to consumers entering their building. And real estate agents will have a new tool to publicize the floor layout and tenants of their commercial listings.
This latest release from Google shows that there is still uncharted territory in the internet world. What’s the next step? We’re guessing it won’t be long before your smart phone will notify you AND show you the way to that “Blue Light Special” in the jock strap department!

“Where am I?” and “What’s around me?” are two questions that cartographers, and Google Maps, strive to answer. With Google Maps’ “My Location” feature, which shows your location as a blue dot, you can see where you are on the map to avoid walking the wrong direction on city streets, or to get your bearings if you’re hiking an unfamiliar trail. Google Maps also displays additional details, such as places, landmarks and geographical features, to give you context about what’s nearby. And now, Google Maps for Android enables you to figure out where you are and see where you might want to go when you’re indoors.
